Memories of the Aragon Ballroom with
Hal Pearl
at the Mighty Wurlitzer
Hal Pearl is probably known as the staff organist at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom where for more than 18 years he alternated sets with America's most famous big bands. He has garnered a reputation over the past years performing theater organ shows in the Chicago area, including several at the famed Chicago Theater. Early in his career he studied to be a concert pianist, earning a degree in music. During the silent movie era he was billed as "Chicago's Youngest Organist." He later taught pipe and Hammond organ for several years at the Chicago Musical College. As a composer his best-known work was "Let Come What May." He has made numerous recordings, and on the radio played background music for So the Story Goes. During the 1970s, WTTW produced a TV show called The Toy That Grew Up, featuring Hal's accompaniment to classic silent films. Hal also played at several important political functions: for Harry Truman in 1955 in the Grand Ballroom of the Sherman Hotel; at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago; and three times for Richard Nixon at the Hilton Hotel. Hal passed away on Nov. 23, 2000 (Thanksgiving Day) at the age of 92.
